Along with CONCRETE… MAPLE SYRUP is flowing at the WOLFCREST PROJECT in Owego, NY

Michael and Sheryl Head

What does Concrete and Maple syrup have in common? The simple answer is Michael and Sheryl Head, owners of the WOLFCREST project in Owego, NY.

In addition to designing and building their own Timber Frame / SIP home on their Park like site, this couple lives on and off the land in the most natural way. Utilizing natural resources and teaching others in their Wilderness Way School is beyond a philosophy… for them it’s a dedication… and a way of life. Working with Michael and Sheryl is too much fun to be considered work. Forty plus acres of private parkland, including a bass-bound lake, portable sawmill and syrup producing Maple trees is a transcendent experience.

Michael

After 53+ years of home building, I think of the design and development stage as gestation. Likewise, watching a foundation emerge from the ground is truly a birthing process. As we watch the physical presence of their home take shape, it’s difficult not to compare it to an act of creation. What did not exist…now does, and in a realized form molded by the imagination, vision and preferences of the parents who provide the dream power.

Michael

Michael is also a member of our TA (Technical Assistance) Apprentice Program and will be hands on with his May 15th Timber Frame and SIP raising. Perhaps you’ll meet him during the birth of your own home.

We’re privileged and proud to be a participant in the creation of all the homes we build. We’re happy to be an Uncle to their child. Of course we will fish in the lake, camp on the grounds and…oh yeah…we are crafting a personal name plate for the Guest Suite :>)!

As Michael would say instead of Good Bye…Yahta’he!

NOT JUST TIMBER FRAMING!

Timber Frame Living Room with Fireplace

Although traditional Timber Frame components are our mainstay, we also provide entire pre-cut framing packages including all phases of a structures assembly. In fact… some of our homes may have NO TIMBER FRAME elements at all.

Our loose, pre-cut stick and/or pre-assembled eSIP wall panels are an exceptionally affordable and efficient option for creating the shell of your home. Pre-assembled eSIP wall panels are available with sustainable soy based insulating foam applied for convenience and energy efficiency.

Combining Timbers and conventional framing is a great way to build-in affordability while creating the home of your preferences. A HYBRID design provides increased bang for your buck by including Timbers only where they can be appreciated and enjoyed by all. There is an added benefit of significant labor savings in the field with the rapid assembly of pre-cut and or pre-panelized components elsewhere.

Sooooo…. NO INTEREST in Timber Frame…NO PROBLEM…we can and will design and build your home the way you want it. After all…you’re the customer…which in our opinion makes you… The Boss of YOU!

WANNA SEE US DO IT?

CLIK HERE…tell us know when you’re available… and we’ll do our best to arrange a tour of our shop in action.

WHO SHOULD OWN A TIMBER FRAME / SIP HOME?

Timber Frame Living Room with Fireplace

I understand this may sound extraordinarily self directed…but after 52 years of building all styles, sizes and price range of homes…in my opinion, the simple answer to this question is…EVERYONE!

The reality is …most of us worker-bees buy a home or real estate in general for its investment value. It’s true that style, location, employment, schools and community are key factors in the decision making process…however given all those parameters…affordability combined with current and future market value are truly a driving force.

In virtually every case a Timber Frame / SIP enclosed homeowner can rely on maximizing their ROI (Return on Investment) by virtue of their TF/SIP homes:

AFFORDABILITY
DURABILITY
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
ELEVATED MARKET VALUE
EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY

Speaking Personally!

Jack Red ShirtWe’re wishing our current and future TIMBER FRAME HOMEOWNERS, TF COLLEAGUES, FAMILY and FRIENDS a HEALTHY, HAPPY and PROSPEROUS 2013.

We’re well on our way in North Jersey to rebuilding and getting back to normal after the worst storm damage in memory. Our neighbors joined together in a cooperative effort to shelter, feed and comfort those less fortunate. It’s awesome and inspiring to witness.

Many shore communities including my old home town of Staten Island experienced unimaginable devastation. We are supporting their rebuilding efforts through various organizations specifcally set up for HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF and encourage all to participate when and where they can.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING!

WHY BUILD A TIMBER FRAME / SIP HOME?

Our home building, buying preferences… for and beyond ourselves.

“Building durable and energy efficient homes is necessary… the fact that they are a great investment and BEAUTIFUL is a bonus generations of occupants will celebrate and enjoy. What’s not to like?”

TMBER FRAME HOMES ARE DURABLE

The life cycle of Timber Framed structures is measured not in decades but millennia. Yet, of all the current choices for home building, Timber Framed, SIP enclosed structures amount to less than 1% of new homes delivered in the US each year. They are lumped into the category of alternative housing, along with hay bales, earth sheltered and a plethora of unique and creative uses of sustainable material and techniques to provide shelter. In reality Timber Framed structures occupy a history extending over 4,000 years. Other than cave dwellings they are the most used and reliable forms of shelter in the measured history of construction.

During recent trips to China, Japan, Italy, Greece and Sicily this past Fall where we visited this 6th Century Byzantine Era Cathedral; travelers can routinely visit timber framed relics over 1000 years old. Many are in active use to this day. If there is other evidence of durability in building beyond that equation, I’m not sure where we would find it. Although the styles vary significantly, the basic science of wood to wood joinery is virtually unchanged.
